How Invisalign Works

If you or your child is in need of an orthodontic treatment, you are most likely exploring your different options out there for braces. In today’s day and age, you don’t need to settle for uncomfortable and unsightly metal braces. Now you can choose between braces, clear aligners and more. At Santa Rosa Dental in Santa Rosa, we offer our patients the option of Invisalign clear braces to straighten their teeth. Find out Invisalign is the right orthodontic option for you or your child.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a clear braces option that has been around for over 2 decades. After years of patients complaining of the discomfort of wearing metal braces, a young Stanford student was getting his braces off when he thought of the idea of Invisalign. He was given his retainer when he realized that using a series of retainers could work just as well as metal braces. He partnered up with another student and eventually got his idea funded. In the past twenty years, millions of people around the world have to straighten their smile with Invisalign clear aligners thanks to Zia Chishti.

Who is a Candidate for Invisalign?

Before you can begin your Invisalign treatment, you must first find out if you are a good candidate for Invisalign. To find this out, you will need to meet with your dentist at Santa Rosa Dental to have your smile evaluated. This will involve taking x-rays and completing a dental exam. For the most part, Dr. Rice can treat patients who have mild to moderate orthodontic cases. If you have a more severe case, we might refer you to an orthodontist in the area. Invisalign can treat patients who have gaps, overbites, underbites, crossbites, those with crooked or misaligned teeth as well as crowded teeth. Find out from our dentist in Santa Rosa if Invisalign is right for you.

Invisalign Treatment Overview

After your dental exam with our dentist, if you are able to receive an Invisalign treatment, we will first begin by taking impressions of your teeth. These will be sent to the Invisalign lab as well as your entire course of treatment for your aligners to be created. Once they are returned from the lab, your treatment can begin. You will wear the clear aligners for at least 22 hours per day only to remove them for eating, drinking and brushing your teeth.

Every 2 weeks, you will change out your Invisalign clear braces for a new set. This will slowly move your teeth into their correct alignment. Every 6 weeks or so, you will need to visit us so we can evaluate your smile to determine if the treatment is progressing as planned. Once you are done with all of your aligners, we will determine if you need any extra or if you’re okay to start wearing a retainer. Patients should know that most Invisalign treatments take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to complete.
