Home Care Instructions For Temporary Crowns

Home Care Instructions for Temporary Crowns

Many temporary crown placement procedures follow a root canal and/or intensive shaping of a damaged tooth. If you were given anesthesia during your temporary crown placement procedure, do not chew anything until normal feeling returns to your mouth.

After your temporary crown placement procedure:

  • Don’t chew anything for at least one hour.

  • Don’t chew sticky or hard foods with your crown. Chew on the other side of your mouth if you can until you have a permanent crown.

  • Brush as you normally would. Floss carefully, removing the floss from the side of the tooth instead of with an upward motion.

  • If you notice that your teeth are sensitive to pressure or temperature, use a desensitizing toothpaste. If the sensitivity worsens or lasts for more than a few days, please call the office.

  • It is important for your temporary crown to stay in place. If your temporary crown comes off before your next scheduled appointment, please call Santa Rosa Dental. Be sure to save the crown so we can recement it.

If you experience pain or discomfort after your procedure:

  • Take antibiotics or other medications only as directed.

  • Rinse with warm salt water three times each day.

  • If your bite feels uneven, if you experience persistent pain or if you have other concerns, please contact Santa Rosa Dental.
